In the opening pages of "The Cemetery of Prague ," the latest book by Umberto Eco, the protagonist says that he met in 1885 or 1886, at the restaurant "Chez Magny", what continues to remind as the doctor, Austrian or German, Froide (a clear reference to Freud), which supports about cocaine:
... It is especially wonderful for instill confidence in the depression and lift the spirit, make active and optimistic ...
Far be it from me any attitude in favor of any course of drugs, but We would just need some substance to otherwise harmless, that would produce those effects!
Also because, if there were such a substance, we could resign ourselves to agree with Joly (another character in the novel, Eco), which states:
... Picture yourself as a necessary element in the order of the universe is tantamount to us well-read people, what is superstition for the illiterate. You do not change the world with ideas ...
But, since, for now, that substance does not exist, we continue to try to spread good ideas.
